introduction to Chemistry

A 45-page presentation which covers basic principles about atoms, elements, the periodic table, molecules, and bonding. Includes instructions for Lewis dot diagrams, atomic models, and more.
Meant to be used over at least three days (There are review pages in the presentation which signal my "ending points") and supplemented with more student-led learning and activities. Includes two short videos which are fun and under 3 minutes. Lots of visuals.

Proteins

These slides include information on protein synthesis and protein types. It is not just a lecture, but includes activities for student self-learning. There is a short youtube clip and two computer activities for students. This would need to be used in a situation where students have access to computers.

Geologic Time

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Geologic-Time-1611411

A presentation of the Eons of the Precambrian and the Eras of the Phanerozoic Eon. Includes lots of visuals and slides which summarize important events of the past and hypotheses about the formation of the moon, mass extinctions, and endosymbiosis. Would be a good summary after a unit on geologic time, or could also be used over several days with supplemental activities.

And - Just for fun, here's a photo I took from my microscope of a stained cross-section of a pine needle.

GIS data and statistics

Students will see how community arrangement is studied by scientists. This lesson will take qualitative prior knowledge of how populous cities are compared to suburban areas and rural areas and bring in quantitative skills. Science will be presented in a way that ties mathematics and data analysis in with social issues such as community.
Students will see how scientists observe and differentiate physical communities of people using mathematic data. Then, students will practice simplified versions of these techniques as they practice scientific principles in a math-based lab.

Ohm's Law

A lesson plan for introducing students to Ohm's law. http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ohms-Law-1130357
I found that the simulations on http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-ac are just as effective as setting up wires, batteries, and light bulbs (and voltmeters and ammeters) and it's free! These simulations are a really nice way to use inquiry in the science classroom.

Free mini-lectures

A free mini-lecture based on the principles Richard Duschl wrote about in 1985, which the NSTA and others have heralded. This is an introduction to the nature of science, or NOS, for discussion in a classroom. Uses powerpoint and creative commons licensed photos.

Some favorite science teacher links

I know there are a billion blogs out there by teachers who love to share a billion helpful links. But, this one is mine. I am hoping it will be helpful to others, but I also just want a place to keep ideas and lists and photos and classroom lessons/demos.
I'll try not to waste anyone's time with links that I haven't really explored, links that are out-of-date, or links that are glorified advertisements (although I can't guarantee this won't change over time). I will update this list from time to time.
